What to Do in Common Dental Emergencies

At Ascent Dental, our team, including Dr. Zil Patel, understands that dental emergencies can be uncomfortable and distressing. We want you to know that we are here for you in case of any dental emergencies. Here are some of the most common dental emergencies and what to do in each situation.

1. Toothache

If you experience a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food particles that may be causing the discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen can also help. Contact Ascent Dental, and Dr. Zil Patel will examine your tooth to determine the cause of the pain and recommend appropriate treatment.

2. Broken or chipped tooth

If you break or chip a tooth, save any pieces that you can find and rinse your mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. Applying a cold compress to your cheek can also help to reduce swelling. Call Ascent Dental immediately, and Dr. Zil Patel will examine your tooth and provide emergency care to restore your tooth.

3. Knocked-out tooth

If a tooth has been knocked out, it’s important to act fast. Hold the tooth by the crown (the part that’s normally visible in your mouth) and rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub the tooth or remove any tissue fragments that may be attached to it. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket if possible, or place it in a cup of milk or saliva to keep it moist. Contact Ascent Dental immediately for emergency care, and Dr. Zil Patel will work quickly to save your tooth.

4. Lost filling or crown

If a filling or crown falls out, use a small amount of dental cement or toothpaste to cover the exposed area and protect it from sensitivity. Avoid eating or drinking hot or cold foods until the restoration can be replaced. Contact Ascent Dental to schedule an appointment as soon as possible, and Dr. Zil Patel will replace your filling or crown to restore your tooth.

5. Soft tissue injury

Injuries to the gums, tongue, or cheeks can be painful and require immediate attention. Rinse your mouth with salt water to clean the area and reduce the risk of infection. If there is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. Contact Ascent Dental for emergency care if the injury is severe or the bleeding does not stop. Dr. Zil Patel will examine your injury and provide appropriate treatment to promote healing.
