Teeth Cleaning Tips to Avoid Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease

Ascent Dental strives to create and maintain your gorgeous smile with professionally recommended cleanings at least twice a year. Professional cleanings remove built-up plaque and tartar that harm your gums and reveal a brighter, shinier, and healthier smile. During your new patient exam, Dr. Zil Patel will determine the health of your gums to recommend a type of cleaning to improve the health of your gums.

Types of cleaning

Healthy Gums:

Daily oral hygiene, healthy food choices, and recommended regular dental cleanings can lead to beautiful and healthy gums. These gums can be maintained with dental cleanings twice a year.

Gingivitis:

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. It often results in inconsistent oral hygiene habits that leave plaque and tartar attached to teeth. Gingivitis can often lead to periodontal disease over time without appropriate cleaning. Signs of Gingivitis include gums that bleed easily, red, tender, or swollen gums, and bad breath. Ascent Dental recommends treating this condition with improvement in oral hygiene habits, a healthy choice of diet, and bi-annual professional cleanings.

Periodontal Disease:

Periodontal disease is caused by an infection in your gums that leads to the loss of gums that hold your teeth in place. Periodontal disease often leads to bad breath, moving teeth, and increased sensitivity. Periodontal disease is a result of plaque and tartar being attached to the teeth for a prolonged period of time. These bacteria can lead to irritation of your gums. The gums begin to pull away from your teeth creating deeper pockets where more bacteria and food can collect. These pockets can collect and harvest bacteria leading to further damage to gums. It is difficult to remove plaque without professional cleaning. Deep cleaning is advised to remove the bacteria from the deep pockets and allow gums to reattach to the teeth. In order to prevent ongoing bone loss, gum disease must be managed with more frequent cleaning every 3 – 4 months and with diligent home care.
